It Is Finished!

Finished. It’s a rather ordinary word that occurs many times throughout the New Testament. For example, “When Jesus had finished saying…” (Matthew 7:28; 19:1; 26:1). But sometimes it packs a punch when it is used in a particular context. Paul said in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” That’s inspiring!

Of course, the best use of the word comes from Jesus, when He said in John 19:30, “It is finished.” From the cross He cried out in victory that His mission to save humanity was complete, and our debt had been paid in full! No other use of the word will ever stand on par with Jesus’ declaration.

However, I was blessed to use that same phrase recently for something that will not register in the pages of history. In fact, it won’t register with anyone outside my tiny, humble circle of life. But for me, it was a cry of relief as I completed my doctoral studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. It is finished!
